With the increased presence of short-form media, effective communication is no longer just an art possessed by the educated but an essential life skill. This reaffirms my belief that grade 12 university level English is necessary for admission into university programs. The benefits of having higher minimum requirements for university admission are applicable to the applicants but also to the people they will interact and influence in the world.

Necessary for Effective Communication

Being able to communicate more effectively does not mean speaking with an air of superiority or by using complex terms or words that the layman may not often encounter. Effective communication is being able to identify relevant information and being able to pass it on with accuracy of intent and content.

Say you are a statistics student tasked with writing a thesis about the total number of victims of spousal homicide in Canada. You may include factors such as location by province or city, but you would likely exclude factors such as race or age. In this case, total homicides by province are sub-factors to the total of victims in Canada. However, factors such as age are not relevant to finding out how many partners were murdered. Although statistics may not be viewed as a course where a high level of English is required, the skills acquired through taking university level English still come into play.

English at the university level emphasizes critical thinking, this allows students to ensure they can articulate their thoughts in a way that is pertinent to the subject matter.

Reading and Writing Skills are Vital to EVERY Field

As shown above, reading and writing skills are fundamental even in courses where English is not a core learning goal. Being able to understand, structure, punctuate, and emphasize papers effectively in university will surely differentiate a good student from an exceptional one.

Being able to comprehend texts such as essays, reports and other published literature is key to one's success. Not all readings are created equal. With varying levels of communicative effectiveness, documents may be complex and difficult to interpret. University students have to examine many concepts and be able to identify the relevant knowledge and expand upon it.

Grade 12 university level English also teaches advanced methods of writing and provides foundational skills for future university students. Appropriate formatting and language work in tandem to create more compelling texts. Effectual writing is an art form that is mastered by utilizing correct word choice with the correct method of delivery. University students must present their knowledge in a manner suitable to the assignment.

Maintaining a standardized grade 12 credit ensures that students are able to present their ideas clearly and concisely. They should also be able to interpret various writings to their own academic benefit. Having a standard for literacy and written communication is a bona fide requirement for any potential university students.

Future World Leaders

It is no secret that university graduates often become a part of a higher socioeconomic status. Dedicating substantial time and effort towards studies surely increases ones knowledge and perceived intelligence. But, possessing the ability to communicate effectively is a surefire way to command respect or attention.

Occupations of high importance often require a university degree. Ensuring that English language skills are standardized creates a level of perceived intelligence that is characteristic of a university graduate. The leaders of tomorrow deserve to be able to impose their insights on the world in the way they truly intend. Foreign scholars such as doctors or lawyers may immigrate to Canada with the hope of continuing their occupation here. But are often snuffed and forced to start at ground zero due to "lack of Canadian experience" or poor communication skills.

An example of this in recent media is the story of Liberal MP Chandra Arya. Although I am sure Mr. Arya is a very intelligent guy, his perceived intelligence by the public is quite poor. Due to his inability to communicate what he may have truly meant, he was heavily ridiculed and criticized. This ultimately ended in disqualifying him from being a potential prime minister of Canada.

Conclusion

Mandating a grade 12 university level English credit for university admission promotes the power that literacy and effective communication hold. Having a baseline for the skills that are reading, writing and speaking is crucial. Being able to interact with the world in a way that is meaningful and true to oneself is important for success in university but also in life.
